Sugar: Traders in the UK confine themselves to national market

FRANKFURT/LONDON. The British sugar industry is profiting from the uncertainties over Brexit. At present, competitors from other EU countries present no challenge.

EU presents no competition for UK market

UK production is expected to range on a similar level as last year. Yields should improve thereby offsetting the reduction in acreage. The manufactures will exclusively be offering sugar from the new campaign in the national market. Major producers in other EU countries, such as Tereos and Südzucker, are refraining from shipments to the UK due to concerns over the uncertain impact of Brexit. Therefore, the British sugar industry - above all British Sugar - can afford to offer sugar from the new campaign at EUR 0.52-
