Dates: Packaging industry demands exorbitant prices

TEHRAN. Although production is set to decline drastically this year, the exporters in Iran are nevertheless confident that they will see good turnovers. Trading is, however, not only rendered difficult by the sanctions imposed on Iran but also by the dramatic increases in the prices for cartons.

Production to decline by 30%

Iran is the leading exporter and second largest producer of dates in the global market. While Last year’s production ranges at 1.23 million metric tonnes, this year’s production is currently expected to decline by as much as 30% to0.9 to 1 million metric tonnes. The decline is mainly driven by the droughts witnessed over the last few year, early warming and pests. In addition, the government has banned exports over the last few months meaning that around 200,000-250,000 metric tonnes are currently stored in the warehouses. Tr
