Dried figs: Rumours over TMO intervention

AYDIN. A good harvest and farmers who refuse to part from the high price levels they are used to are fuelling rumours in Turkey that the TMO may act as a buyer this season.

Producers feel the pressure

After hazelnuts and sultanas, dried figs may become the next product to be regulated by the TMO. Reports state that the chairman of the Taris considers it possible that the TMO may buy as much as 10,000-15,000 metric tonnes this year. Producers in Turkey have very much got used to the high price levels of the last few years. Traders, however, currently refuse to pay farmgate prices of TRY 25 per kg as production has increased over last year and the quality is said to be excellent.
