CANBERRA/PEKING. Market players are maintaining their estimates for the Australian macadamia production 2019/2020. Expectations for this year's production in China, however, are very different.

Plus or minus?

Due to the drought, the macadamia production in Australia was reduced by 13% to 42,900 metric tonnes. At the same time, the export demand remains steady. The USA, Japan and Germany are among the most important purchasers. The main producing country South Africa experiences dry and warm weather. Thanks to investments on the promotion of macadamia cultivation, exports for the 2019/2020 season estimate an increase to 58,500-60,000 metric tonnes in production.

The situation is different in China. According to the current report of the INC, the crop volume is expected to rise to 31,500 metric tonnes this year; the most recent forecast was just under 30,000 metric tonnes. The November report of the Australian Macadamia Society, however, contrasts with this as it speaks of a decline in Chinese macadamia production to around 20,000 metric tonnes.
