KERMAN. The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council has recently highlighted that water deficits are a cause of concern in the Middle East and in Africa. Iran is no exception to this as 97% of the fresh date production stems from irrigated areas. Political tensions are currently impacting the market.

Excess supplies weigh on prices

Fresh date production ranges at 1.223 million metric tonnes in Iran, of which 98.8% are produced in the Kerman, Sistan and Baluchestan provinces as well as the Fars, Bushehr and Hormozgan provinces. Market players report that the supplies have increased for all varieties over the last two weeks. These excess supplies have pushed down the prices for Mazafati dates, despite demand being low and political tensions rendering trading difficult.
