SANTIAGO DE CHILE. Production is set to decline by 10% to 15% in Chile. The main reason are adverse weather conditions.

Drough impacts production

Chilenut has recently estimated production at 135,000 metric tonnes, which is a decline of 10%-15% since last year. Problem is that drought has impacted production. Acreage currently reanges at 45,261 hectares. The Valparaíso region, where annual production ranges at 9,000 metric tonnes, is particularly hard hit. Here the drought was most pronounced and the trees failed to flower. The SERR variety is most heavily impacted. Production is estimated to have decline by as much as 20% in the region. Similar problems have been observed in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, where acreage ranges at 13,327 hectares and production at 58,000 metric tonnes. Here, however, the producers can rely on better irrigation systems. Contrary to this, the crop is set to be relatively good in the Bíobío region.
