TEHRAN. Last week’s floods and hailstorms have damaged up to 40%-60% of acreage in some areas in Iran’s main producing region, the Khorasan Razavi province. Cumin production was initially expected to rise this year.

Production to decline by 14%

As much as 40%-60% have been recorded on 400 hectares. Thereby the harvestable area has been reduced to 2,600 hectares. Since 700 kg of cumin are normally harvested per hectare production is currently estimated at 1,820 metric tonnes, which is down 14% only the initial production estimates of 2,100 metric tonnes.

Although cumin is an economically viable plant that requires little water to cultivate, farming is fraught with problems in the Khorasan Razavi province as market players report a lack of price stability and guarantees for purchases as well as workshops for processing and packaging. The adverse weather conditions coupled with a rise in value of the Iranian rial has driven up the prices for black cumin by 3.1%-4.4% since last month.
