MALATYA. The drop in temperature in large parts of Turkey from over 40°C to around 20 °C was accompanied by snowfall at higher altitudes. It also snowed in Malatya, the main growing region for apricots.

Export volume for fresh apricots must not be underestimated

The breaking of the fast is celebrated until Tuesday evening in Turkey, and the curfew that had been valid for three days already will come to an end. Starting tomorrow (27.5.), trade should start to get back to normal, with the focus on estimates and prices for the coming crop. Market players point out that export demand for fresh apricots is also relevant to the results of dried apricot production and could affect actual volumes. The snowfalls of the last few days are said to have caused no major damage.

For some market players there is no doubt that the TMO will intervene in the dried apricot market in the 2020/2021 season to regulate the market, as was the case last year with other dried fruits such as sultanas and figs. Official information, however, is not yet available.

Exports still lower than year

The short trading week reduced last week's exports of dried apricots by around 500 metric tonnes to 1,133 metric tonnes compared to last year. With the declining weekly exports, the difference for the current season compared to last year has grown to more than 2,200 metric tonnes; since the start of the season only 86,688 metric tonnes have been shipped overseas. This week, too, a lower export volume is expected due to the public holidays and the curfew.
