BEIJING. Exporters in China are slowly but surely gearing up for the new pumpkin seed season. Current reference prices certainly have the potential to go down

Encouraging prospects

Market players are highly satisfied with the development of the Shine Skin plants in Xinjiang. The weather in the northwest of the country provided ideal conditions and the are sown is said to be larger than expected. If prospects remain good, yields will most certainly be high. The uptick in Shine Skin sowing has, however, cut back GWS sowing in many places and production is estimated as low as 8,000 metric tonnes. Coupled with last season's carry-over stocks, supplies will only be enough to meet demand.

Prices should decline

The harvest season is approaching and traders in China are starting to try out which prices are acceptable for the new crop. GWS kernels are not expected to trade much lower in the new season than they are now. Shine skin kernels should, however, trade below USD 3,000 per metric tonne. Supply and demand will naturally play a decisive role for any further price developments, along with the impact of the pandemic.
