MADRID/SACRAMENTO. The export figures issued for June exports give the impression that many buyers are trying to make up for time lost due to pandemic related restrictions. Export volumes have risen by 8%.

First shipments in August

The National Agricultural Statistics Service has maintained its US production estimate of 1.36 million metric tonnes. Blue Diamond Almonds, meanwhile, estimates final stocks at 208,500 metric tonnes. Total supplies of almonds without shell should, therefore, range at 1.5 million metric tonnes in 2020/2021.

The almond market has been under constant pressure over the last few months, which made prices plummet. This boosted spot market sales and contracts for the new season. According to the Almond Board of California, contracts over 207,000 metric tonnes have already been concluded for the new season, of which 120,350 metric tonnes are destined for the export market. Blue Diamond Almonds also states that the first mechanical shakers can be sent to the orchards in the second half of July. The first batches of the early almond varieties may be ready for loading in August.

June exports have recovered

Since the start of the season, a total of 995,761 metric tonnes of shelled and unshelled almonds have been shipped both nationally and internationally. Both domestic consumption (+5% to 321,643 mt) and export demand (+4% to 674,118 mt) have thus increased compared to last year. After declining exports in April and May, exports increased again in June 2020. Deliveries to the domestic market increased by 2% to 26,537 metric tonnes, the export volume increased by 8% to 53,009 metric tonnes.

Only shipments to China were significantly below last year's level at 2,521 metric tonnes (-43%). In contrast, exports to Germany (+40% to 4,897 mt), Italy (+13% to 3,056 mt), India (+52% to 10,589 mt), Spain (-1% to 6,665 mt) and Turkey (+186% to 1,525 mt) remained stable until June.

Prices mainly stable

For the second week in a row, almond prices have been stable compared to previous months. Depending on the supplier, there may be slight corrections, but overall they should have reached their lowest point for the time being. However, Spanish almond traders fear that the high supply of U.S. almonds could put further pressure on domestic prices in the coming season.
