Blue poppy seeds: no buying incentive despite price drop

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. Contrary to their usual habits, Czech blue poppy farmers were cutting prices at the end of last year in order to boost demand. So far, however, the hoped-for success has failed to materialise and prices are being reduced in the new year as well.

Down EUR 0.50/kg within three months

Since the beginning of November 2020, the price level has dropped by around EUR 0.50/kg, or 25%, to EUR 1.53/kg FCA Czech Republic. This time last year, traders were still charging EUR 2.80/kg DDP Germany, and at the beginning of 2019, prices were approaching their all-time high and were already at EUR 4.35/kg DDP. The good quality and the high crop result, combined with low demand, are putting pressure on prices. How low prices will fall therefore depends on the buying interest and market players do
