Sunflower seeds: India as a possible alternative

SOFIA/NEW DELHI. Eastern European sunflower seeds are scarce this season, and the rapid price increase is calling long-forgotten trading partners back into action.

Attractive offers from Asia

In the early 2000s, India's sunflower seed crop regularly exceeded 1.5 million mt and the EU imported about 1,500-2,000 mt from India annually. Since 2008, production, and thus EU shipments, declined rapidly, and other countries came to the fore. According to USDA data, just 185,000 mt of sunflower seeds were harvested in India in the 2020/2021 season, the third lowest in the past 20 years - undercut only by production results in 2018 (172,000 mt) and 2019 (140,000 mt).
