NEW DELHI. Sesame seed farmers in the Indian state of Gujarat are once again sowing at full throttle. The acreage thus grew by 128% year-on-year.

Sesame seeds in the farmers' focus

So far, sesame seed farmers in Gujarat have sown 83,451 ha for the summer crop, 128% or 46,868 ha more than this time last year. Farmers also managed to increase the acreage by nearly 50% in one week from 55,702 ha. Under normal circumstances, the new crop should be available in the Indian spot market from mid-May. While the progress in sesame seed cultivation is by far the most impressive, the official figures show that Gujarat's farmers are also growing significantly more agricultural commodities overall than a year ago
