Cumin: yields differ in Iran

TEHRAN. Cumin requires little water and is highly attractive for farmers in Iran. Not only do the plants increase water productivity but farmgate prices are relatively firm and enable farmers to sell at reasonable prices. Things are, however, different in the export market. Harvesting started in May with varying yields throughout the different provinces.

Farmers step up production

Cumin is highly adaptable to adverse environmental conditions and therefore perfectly suited for cultivation in Iran. Not crossing cumin with other crops is also effective in clearing weeds. Since cumin is a medicinal plant export demand is good. On top of this, there is only limited fluctuation in price in the domestic market, which helps farmers to sell at reasonable prices. Some provinces are, however, more successful than others in producing and selling cumin.
