Dried apricots: production estimates called into question

MALATYA. Harvesting is picking up speed in Malatya in Turkey. Labourers are permitted to travel from other provinces, providing they have tested negative of Covid-19.

Offers available soon

The rains of the recent weeks have made way for high temperatures ranging above 40C in Malatya. Market players hope that the weather conditions will last until the frutis have been dried. Although preparations are underway to dry the fruit, demand for fresh apricots may reduce supplies for dried apricot production. Exporters are, therefore, holding back with offers for the new crop. Prices will only be issued next week at the earliest.

Buyers are anything but interested in spot offers side and the export prices have remained firm for prompt shipments. Suppliers are busy dealing with the final shipments for the season. Some have already started their summer break to conduct cleaning and maintenance work. Exports are expected to rise to 95,000-100,000 metric tonnes by the end of July, meaning that carry-over supplies should be very limited.

Global production set to decline

The INC estimates Turkey's dried apricot production at 78,000 metric tonnes, a 22% decline on last year. Some traders have, however, called this estimate into question as market estimates rather range at 104,000 metric tonnes. Global production is expected to decline by 11.5% to 159,250 metric tonnes. Lower yields are not only anticipated in Turkey but also in Iran, the US and in South Africa.
