Dried figs: production set to decline by 16%

AYDIN. Recently issued INC estimates state that dried fig supplies will decline in 2020/2021. And yet, it is still far too early for final production estimates in Turkey.

Production in Turkey to range at 75,000 metric tonnes

The rise in temperature over the last few days provides much better conditions for fruit development in Turkey. Dried fig production is, nevertheless, expected to decline by 16% to 75,000 metric tonnes on last year. More accurate estimates will, however, only be issued in around eight weeks. The decline in production in leading producing countries such as Turkey and Iran cannot be offset by higher yields in Greece and the US. Global production is, therefore, expected to decline by 13% to 135,400 metric tonnes.

Comparatively low spot market prices

Turkey's export season is coming to an end and many suppliers are exclusively focused on existing contracts. Prices are firm but may still vary by as much as USD 1,000 per metric tonne, depending on supplier. This wide price gap, notwithstanding, it should be noted that export prices currently range much lower than in the last two years. Offers for the new crop will only be issued in a few weeks' time.
