Desiccated coconuts: surprising turn in Europe

MANILA. Some producers in the Philippines have been forced to run extra shifts to tackle a backlog. Traders, meanwhile, report a surprising shift in Europe.

Backlog in the Philippines

The pandemic has generated so much uncertainty in the Philippines that workers are afraid to return to factories and staffing levels are anything but ideal in the Philippines. On top of this distancing and hygiene rugulations mean that manufactures are reaching capacity limits a lot faster than usual. In a bid to compensate for this, some producers are running additional shifts. They are also trying to speed up the procurement of coconuts to counteract possible disruptions in the supply chain.

Buyers in Europe are looking for coconut products

The manufactures in Philippines are currently refusing enquiries for prompt shipments until the backlog has been cleared. Although the demand situation is far from encouraging, especially with regard to the catering sector, market players in Europe that buyers are looking for desiccated coconuts and that contracts are being made. The prices in the producing countries are, however, considered relatively expensive. Desiccated coconuts from the Philippines and Indonesia are trading in a firm range in Europe. At EUR 2.25 per kg fine desiccated coconuts from Sri Lanka are, however, trading more than EUR 0.10 per kg higher than two weeks ago.
