Almonds: first crop estimates issued

MADRID/SACRAMENTO. California's almond orchards will need quite some time to recover from last year's bumper crop. Flowering is now over and first production estimates have been issued.

High carry-over stocks expected

Blue Diamond Almonds, for instance, estimates this year's production at around 1.27 million mt. The weather in March will prove decisive for the development of the fruits and more reliable estimates will be issued at the start of April. The Almond Board of California, meanwhile, estimates last year's prodcution at around 1.4 million mt. Initial estimates ranged lower at 1.36 million mt. SACRAMENTO/MADRID. Although US almond production is expected to range lower, arrivals are currently 14% up on last year. As harvesting started early arrivals have risen. Buyers and Europe and China are taking advantage of large supplies.

BEIJING. Demand for walnuts is up in China as local processors are busy obtaining sufficient supplies for the Golden Week, which is celebrated on 01-07 October. This has largely impacted prices. Prices are too high for some buyers.

Long queues are being reported in front of the TMO as growers are intent on selling to the state-run organisation. Prices have drifted far apart.
