Spider mite infestation in Córdoba
With harvesting underway in Spain agricultural organisation ASAJA Córdoba is concerned about a spider mite infestation. This pest has already caused leaf drop, will prompt production to range an estimated 5-10% lower than initially anticipated and jeopardise next year’s crop in the province.
Initial projections stood at 11,000 mt, as much as 30% higher than last year, mainly due to abundant rainfall in autumn, winter an early spring, which helped to refill reservoirs after several years of drought. Exports could be better.
Surge in exports to US
Exports have dipped considerably in terms of volume in 2025/2026. At 115,764 mt the country’s shelled and in-shell almond exports for August 2025 to June 2026 stand 14% lower than in the same period in 2024/2025 according to provisional data issued by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. Germany has retained its position as main trading partner, despite a 17% decline in shipments. Exports to other EU member states, which account for the lion’s share of Spain’s exports, are showing similar downturns – with the noted exceptions of Portugal and Greece.
Exports to the USA range nearly eight times higher than last year. By contrast, shipments to the two other non-European destinations featuring in the top ten, namely Egypt and Turkey, have fallen by double digits.

Spain mainly exports shelled rather than in-shell almonds. While shipments have declined for all varieties, sweet in-shell almonds are showing a comparatively modest decline of 2% in terms of volume.

Price rise continues
Harvesting is also underway in California with early arrivals showing smaller kernels. Industry crop estimates range at 2.7 billion pounds. As potential rain in the fall may pose a risk to quality and supply constraints are a possibility prices are on the rise. Although optimism was initially voiced that the growers may profit from higher prices reports are now rather indicating that these gains will be eaten up by higher production costs. Quotations for shipments to Europe have surged since last week.
