Blue poppy seeds: new crop down by 5%

PRAGUE/BRUSSELS. The Czech Republic’s poppy seed crop cannot match last year’s figures. Strong demand is supporting prices. Germany increased its imports from the Czech Republic by 8% in the 2025/2026 season.

Higher prices despite new crop

Czech poppy farmers had sown a significantly larger acreage this year than in 2025. Initially, the fields looked promising, and in some cases an average yield of 1 mt/ha was being discussed. However, as the harvest progressed, repeated crop failures became apparent, meaning that this year’s poppy seed production will not be able to match last year’s figure despite the increase in acreage.
