Blue poppy seeds: Czech production up by almost 60%

CHRUDIM. Larger acreages and higher yields have significantly increased the Czech blue poppy seed crop this year. This has ensured that prices have become noticeably more favourable again compared to previous years.

Supply well above last year

The fact that the Czech poppy seed crop was significantly better this year was already apparent in recent months. In its latest crop report, the Czech Statistical Office once again revised its estimates upwards. In total, the acreage increased by 39.5% to 37,000 hectares compared to last year. In addition, more favourable weather conditions resulted in a much higher yield (+13.9% to 0.78 mt/ha), meaning that a total of around 29,000 mt of poppy seeds were harvested – an increase of 58.9% compared to the previous year.
