PRAGUE. Not all market participants agree that current demand for blue poppy seeds is low. Different views have apparently lead to different facts.

Some traders are satisfied with demand. The most recent export figures for Czech poppy seeds, moreover, confirm their perception of the market situation (custom tariff’s number 12079190, poppy seeds, whether or not broken, excl. for sowing). The case being that exports have indeed increased over the last few years (in Aug-Dec). In 2014 exports even climbed to 15,000 mt. Imports have, in addition, decreased by as much as 1,000 mt this season.

Production has more than doubled
Production should, however, also be considered. It has more than doubled over the last few years thereby growing much faster than international demand. This is one reasons why the prices have remained on a comparatively low level of 1.20-1.25 EUR/mt DDP Germany for some time now. Although production and exports have developed disproportionally traders are, nevertheless, confident that the carry-over stocks will again be very limited this season.
