Blue poppy seeds: all eyes are on the weather

CHRUDIM. Czech poppy sowing continues to benefit from the favourable weather conditions. Farmers and traders are nevertheless cautious with speculative prices for the 2020 crop.

Fear of loss is predominant

After the dry weather in April, May brought sufficient rainfall to the poppy farmers and the plants were able to develop well. While everything is currently pointing to a very good crop, traders and farmers are still holding back when it comes to offers for the new crop. The June weather last year had a devastating effect on yields, so the coming weeks will be closely monitored. Only if the positive weather trend continues, market players will be able to relax and calculate prices for the coming season in a timely manner - which will probably be significantly cheaper than in this marketing year. Meanwhile, Czech blue poppy seeds for prompt delivery are at a level of EUR 2.70 per kg FCA Czech Republic, just like last week.

Import develops differently

Between August 2019 and March 2020, 4,182 metric tonnes of poppy seeds were imported into Germany, around 20% less than last year at this time. Imports from the Czech Republic, Poland and Turkey have decreased significantly and shipments from China came to a complete standstill according to data from the Federal Statistical Office. Meanwhile, imports from Austria more than doubled to over 1,000 metric tonnes during this period.
