OLOMOUC/BRUSSELS. Czech poppy farmers were in for a nasty surprise during the spring poppy harvest. This also had an impact on price trends for the new crop. EU countries have increased their exports in the 2025/2026 season.

Shock in the poppy fields

Czech poppy farmers learnt the hard way just how deceptive appearances can be this summer. According to market players, the poppy plants actually looked promising this year, and growers set out into the fields full of anticipation for a good crop with yields of around 1 mt/ha. It is estimated that around half of the Czech poppy acreage will only be able to achieve a yield of 0.3-0.4 mt/ha.
