PRAGUE. This year’s production estimates are little encouraging for buyers, especially since market players in the Czech Republic are now seizing the chance to push up prices.

Wild speculations

The Czech Statistical Office currently reckons with an acreage for poppy seeds as small as 32,586 ha, which is 8.3% less than last year. Drought in addition stirs worries over a below average yield. Should yields, for instance, decrease to 0.75 mt/ha this year’s production will drop by as much as 14.5% as compared to 2016. More precise information will, however, only be available once the harvest has started. Until then speculations will be running wild.
