CHRUDIM. Poppy seed harvesting is set to start in a few weeks in the Czech Republic. The excessive rains in June may, however, cause nominal delays.

Blue poppy seed farmers are lucky

Although the rains in June prevented another bad crop year as the plants are developing well and yields are expected to range high, the wet and cold weather has also slowed down growing and may delay the start of the harvest. The weather will also prove decisive over the next few weeks. In addition, it should be noted that some winter crops have grown mould and require treatment due to the high humidity in parts of the country.

Old and new crop trade in firm range

Despite the low demand for spot purchases, blue poppy seeds are not trading below EUR 2.60 per kg FCA Czech Republic. The pressure is simply not high enough for suppliers to go further down in price. Offers for the new crop, which will should arrive in the second half of August, currently range at EUR 2.06 per kg FCA Czech Republic.
