ANKARA/CHRUDIM. In Turkey, farmers have now completed their poppy seed sowing for the coming crop and market players see their expectations confirmed.

TMO waits for prices

Turkish farmers are mainly sowing white poppy seeds this year again, about twice to three times as much as blue poppy seeds. Upon request of Der AUDITOR, the TMO announced that official data on the acreage will not be released until the TMO has published its purchase price for the 2020/2021 season. It is unclear, however, when this will happen. Market players reckon that the governmental organization could make a statement in the coming weeks, at the latest after Ramadan at the end of May.

Also traders hold back with offers for the new crop. In contrast, the spot prices for Turkish blue poppy seeds from the 2019 crop are at a level of USD 3.35 per kg CFR Hamburg. White poppy seeds, <20 ppm morphine are traded for USD 3.20 per kg CFR.

Czech Republic benefits from the weather

The Czech blue poppy seed market is again extremely calm when it comes to spot trading this week. However, there is no pressure to sell, which is why prices remain at a level of EUR 2.77-2.79/kg DDP Germany. The rain of the past days and the sunny and warm weather had a positive effect on the development of the plants. Nevertheless, despite the acreage, traders are reluctant to make offers for the new crop.
