Blue poppy seeds: Traders are stoking rumours

PRAGUE. And still, it will take a little more than the sale of their blue poppy seeds to break through the Czech farmers’ reserve.

The farmers’ objective is a higher price for their produce, but the buyers are not doing those kinds of favours, and even punish the farmers with lack of inquiries. The actual victims, though, are the Czech blue poppy seed traders, because they are lacking the necessary produce to offer for sale, as well as the buyers, to whom they could sell said produce.

Time is running out
Despite all, traders hoping that demand will increase again by November, and a few deals can be made before Christmas. The SIAL could provide them with an opportunity to do so. And even if trading activity should increase in the coming weeks, market participants do not believe that prices will increase rapidly, however much the farmers would like to sell at a higher level. The turn of the year should bring lower prices along with it, when it gets to be traditionally very quiet on the market.

Unsatisfactory
In view of the current Czech Statistical Office’s report, there is a significant surplus this season on the Czech blue poppy seed market. Traders report, however, that the blue poppy seeds have lost in quality during the harvesting phase, and that they had to return several deliveries already, since these did not meet their quality standards.
