Blue poppy seeds: possible yield losses due to lack of rainfall

CHRUDIM. Czech market players are showing concern about this year's poppy seed crop. Flowering is reportedly delayed, while cultivation estimates are not expected to be confirmed by officials until early July.

Rain is sorely needed

Cool temperatures and snowfall during sowing have already caused delays this year. The resulting later start to flowering is causing concern among market players, as the poppy plants are about to flower and urgently need rain in order to develop well. So far, however, farmers have been waiting in vain for the necessary rainfall, and now there is great concern that crop yields will suffer. Unofficial estimates put the acreage at 40,000 ha, which would be about the same size as last year.
