CHRUDIM. Interrupted by occasional showers, the weather has been very sunny and warm lately in the Czech growing regions. Farmers are worried about their poppies.

Farmers fear for their blue poppy
The poppies are still developing well, but urgently need rain for the plants to survive. Market players report that there is no appreciable damage yet, and therefore blue poppy seeds from the new crop are still being offered starting at 1.35 EUR/kg FCA Czech Republic. Prompt deliveries are even slightly lower than last week at 1.23 EUR/mt FCA.

Further development of the market depends on the weather, and if there are drought and crop losses, higher prices must be expected. Due to the smaller acreage, the Czech Statistical Office had recently estimated the 2017 poppy production at 25,600 mt.
