Cashews: challenging drying conditions and prices

NEW DELHI. More inquiries are coming in for whole cashew kernels in India. Poor drying conditions are a problem in Côte d’Ivoire. Buyers are paying more attention to quality in Nigeria. Kernel rates are simply too low for processor to make profits in Vietnam.

Uptick in demand in India

In India, demand for whole cashew kernels has grown slowly in the past two weeks as processors and traders see more inquiries. However, demand for broken cashew pieces remains slow, keeping prices slightly down or flat. At the same time, the Indian rupee has dropped past 95 INR per USD, which raises the landed cost of importing raw cashew nuts (RCN). Even with this currency pressure, new crop arrivals in Andhra Pradesh and Panruti are very good in terms of quality and quantity.
