SOFIA. In some regions, farmers are complaining about too low prices. In others, prices may be higher, but supplies are very low.

Cherries: Low prices cause frustration

According to the June estimates of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture, 40% (3,378 ha) of the harvest have been completed. Farmers have so far collected 18,204 mt. At the same time last year only 7,739 mt had been harvested. Due to more beneficial weather the prospects are much better this year. The average national yield is estimated at 5.4 mt/ha. In orchards within the Southeast, local yields reached as high as 7.5 - 7.9 mt/ha.

The harvest is in full swing and arrivals will reach their peak very soon, which means that prices for cherries, which are used in the processing sector and are thus smaller in size, have dropped to as low as 0.30 EUR/kg EXW, according to local farmers. There are calls for the government to intervene and support prices. This is, however, unlikely to happen.

Higher quality, higher prices

Farmers in the Northeast are not complaining of low prices, but of low yields. Due to adverse weather conditions the output in the Northeast is to drop five-times lower than last year. However, the cherries are much bigger, and farmgate prices reach as high as 1.00 EUR/kg EXW.
