NEW DELHI. Trading has come to an unusual standstill for chickpeas in India. Supplies will be an issue this year. Expectation is that prices will shift.

Unusual standstill

Delhi’s wholesale chickpea scene is unusually still. Buyers are keeping their distance, but prices are barely flinching. Behind this apparent calm is a far more concerning reality. The next arrival of Kabuli chickpeas will not reach the markets for roughly two months, maybe slightly longer depending on how logistics unfold. What traders are selling today is, in effect, a slow drawdown of previous stockpiles.
