Coconuts: Suppliers are hesitant about long-term contracts

MANILA/COLOMBO. In the middle of last year, the international prices for coconut oil from Indonesia and the Philippines dropped below 1,000 USD/mt - for the first time since 2013.

 

Rise in production

Coconut oil is still trading on a level of 750-850 USD/mt. The prices have bottomed out. Some reporters blame the price drop on a decline in demand. In 2018 imports to the US for instance dropped by 4%.

Companies in Germany mainly source their coconut oil from the Netherlands. In 2017 Germany imported 52,765 mt of coconut oil (151319 coconut oil and its liquid fractions; source: Federal Statistical Office of Germany), of which 45,462 mt came from the Netherlands.
