Cumin: Exports rise by 40%

TERHAN. Although demand for cumin is certainly on the rise, the exporters in Iran need to find creative ways to ship their products. Last year, Iran exported cumin worth just over USD 5 million, which is an increase of nearly 40% over 2017/2018.

 

Repacked shipments

Last year’s surge in exports was prompted by an increase in production and more attractive prices for cumin from Iran. Annual production in Iran ranges at 12,500-20,000 metric tonnes. Although the country is the sixth largest producer, exports a confronted with enormous difficulties. In 2017/2018 Iran exclusively exported to Japan as 97% of all overseas shipments were destined to Japan. Last year, however, Iran also exported to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
