FRANKFURT. Dates are grown in palm gardens. The true date palm, which carries the edible fruit as we know them, grows to a height of 15-20 m.

The productive life ranges between 80-100 years, but dates are only produced every second year. In revenge, the date palm can carry up to 100 kg of fruit. In 1963, a 2,000-year old date kernel was found, which researchers actually succeeded to make germinate in 2005.

Because of their high sugar content, the arid climate in the growing regions leads to "self-preservation" of dates of different varieties, making them often last at least until the next harvest.
