KERMAN. Iran may only rank fourth in the INC’s table date production chart, but the country sports a rich diversity of different varieties. Suppliers admit that water supply is a problem.

High potential but limited capacities

According to forecasts Iran’s total date production will exceed 1.3 million mt this year, second only to Egypt. Global production ranges at 7.5 million mt and spans an area of 1.1 million ha. Algeria has the largest cultivation area. While average global per capita consumption ranges just above 1 kg, this figure is a lot higher in Iran which has a per capita consumption of 7-10 kg.
