Deceptive prices
While international quotations are fixed for desiccated coconuts, domestic prices are on the rise in the Philippines as TM Duché reports. Buyers should heed the BigGo Finance report, which refers to the Barclay's El Niño report, predicting a super El Niño that will peak in late 2026 to early 2027 and drive up the prices for coconut and palm oil by as much as 30-40%. The remainder of the year presents buyers with a window to purchase additional supplies for 2027 with attention to be paid to quality-specific offers, loading periods and actual availability.

Supply shortages in 2027
As JCP International highlights there are early indications of higher temperatures and below-average rainfall in parts of the Philippines with the impact of the El Niño to be felt for coconut production in 2027.
Furthermore, heavy monsoon rains are affecting large sections of the population in the Philippines. Typhoons and a stronger south-westerly monsoon may disrupt the coconut harvest, the drying of copra, transport between the islands and processing in mills. However, the impact can vary significantly from region to region. Consequently, local supplies may become temporarily scarce, even though the national supply situation may appear to be adequate.
The Drewry World Container Index recently fell by 1%. Rates on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route fell by 3%, and those on the Shanghai-Genoa route by 2%. Yet, it should be noted that waiting times for ships have more than doubled in Shanghai. Freight rates should remain largely stable. Yet, coconut exporters should be prepared for possible delays with connecting services.
