MANILA. Export prices for desiccated coconuts have been defying fluctuations in the commodities market for months. Copra prices, by contrast, have fallen significantly once again. Whilst international coconut oil prices remain stable, quotations in the Philippines are falling.

Desiccated coconuts prices remain stable

Philippine export quotations for desiccated coconuts remained unchanged for the 35th consecutive week, and the average export value also remained stable, whilst the domestic market recovered slightly after two weeks of declining prices, according to T.M. Duché. Export quotations are thus continuing to show greater stability than the markets for copra and coconut oil.

International coconut oil prices also showed little movement. In Rotterdam, quotations rose slightly, although buying activity remained low. In the Philippines, however, prices for crude and refined coconut oil fell. Copra prices also decreased significantly once again. In the Quezon Province, average selling prices fell, whilst the extent of the regional declines varied across different parts of the country. The market experts attribute the recent price falls to a larger supply of copra and limited domestic demand.

El Niño and freight costs remain risk factors

According to the US Climate Prediction Centre of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the El Niño weather phenomenon is continuing to intensify. The probability of a strong to very strong event occurring between January and March 2027 now stands at over 83%. The Philippine weather service, PAGASA, also expects strong to very strong El Niño conditions, which could peak before the end of 2026. Below-average to near-normal rainfall is forecast for the Philippines in October. Although rainfall increased in the most recent reporting period, particularly on Luzon and Mindanao, the distribution of rainfall remains uneven. Prolonged water shortages can impair flowering, fruit set and the development of coconuts, although the consequences for production usually only become apparent months later.

At the same time, the Drewry World Container Index rose again after three weeks of declines and now stands at USD 4,485 for a 40’ FCL. Freight rates on the routes from Shanghai to Rotterdam and Genoa also increased. Despite the current weakness in commodity prices, the future supply situation and the trend in transport costs therefore remain significant sources of uncertainty. Export prices on the European spot market, however, remain unchanged compared with previous weeks.
