MANILA. The coconut market remains under pressure: whilst export quotations for desiccated coconuts are stable, prices for coconut oil and Philippine copra continue to fall. At the same time, the increasing likelihood of a strong El Niño is raising the risk to coconut supplies in 2027.

Export quotations stable, domestic market weaker

International export quotations for desiccated coconuts to the US, Europe and other destinations remained unchanged for the 26th consecutive week. The level was thus below the July average and around 21% below last year’s figure. On the domestic market in Manila, the downturn continued; the weekly average fell again, as reported by the experts at T.M. Duché. The export spread remains very wide and should therefore not be regarded as the market price. At the same time, container freight rates remain high and are weighing on delivery costs.

Coconut oil and copra: prices remain under pressure

The international coconut oil market continued its downward trend, with buying interest remaining limited. According to a report by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), European coconut oil quotations were once again lower on 14 August, confirming the market’s ongoing weakness. The price difference to palm kernel oil has narrowed significantly. On the Philippine domestic market, prices for crude and refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) coconut oil remained largely stable or edged down slightly.

The downward trend also continued for Philippine copra. Both the average processor price and the average producer price fell compared with last week and were well below last year’s levels. There continue to be significant price differences between regions.

El Niño increases risk for the 2027 crop

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has significantly strengthened its El Niño forecast. A very strong El Niño event is now expected in autumn and winter 2026/27 with a probability of more than 90%. For October to December, the probability of reaching a historical strength threshold stands at 69%. El Niño generally increases the risk of below-average rainfall, dry spells and droughts in the Philippines. The impact on coconut production is unlikely to be immediate; however, prolonged rainfall deficits could affect flowering, nut development and subsequent copra yields. According to T.M. Duché, the most significant consequences for supply are therefore expected in 2027.

Container freight rates have recently risen slightly, marking the second consecutive weekly increase. This was driven primarily by trans-Pacific routes. In Europe, by contrast, freight rates remained relatively stable. Nevertheless, transport costs remain at a high level and are having a significant impact on the overall cost of coconut products.
