MANILA/NEW DELHI. The markets for Philippine coconut products remain calm, with trading subdued. At the same time, rising palm oil prices and increasing El Niño risks are providing support to the market. India’s coconut exports rose significantly in 2025/26.

Little movement

Trading in desiccated coconuts and coconut oil for prompt shipment on the European market remains subdued. Export quotations for Philippine desiccated coconuts have been within an unusually stable range for 27 weeks now, with Indonesian and Vietnamese origins being cheaper. On the domestic market, Philippine quotations recovered slightly after two weeks of decline. Buyers still have room for negotiation on short-term deals, whilst exporters have so far refused to make any further significant price reductions; this is reported by the experts at T.M. Duché.

Coconut oil and copra affected by El Niño

The European coconut oil market saw virtually no trading. Whilst prices quoted by European suppliers were higher than buyers’ bids, the Philippine price for crude coconut oil ex-mill has recently risen significantly. This was the first substantial rise since June; however, according to T.M. Duché, it still needs to be confirmed by a further weekly figure.

Meanwhile, palm oil is emerging as a key influencing factor for the vegetable oil sector. Rising palm oil prices are driving up the cost base for coconut oil, thereby limiting the scope for a sustained, independent decline in the price of lauric oils. Furthermore, the very strong El Niño forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for autumn and winter 2026/27 is likely to affect the growth and availability of coconuts in 2027. This could lead to a higher weather-related price premium in Q1 and Q2 of 2027.

Container freight rates ease slightly

Although the Drewry World Container Index rose by 4%, freight rates on routes relevant to Europe fell. Rates on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route fell by 1%, and on the Shanghai-Genoa route by 2%. For the coming week, Drewry expects rates between Asia and Europe to remain largely stable. However, limited capacity, congestion and announced cancellations of sailings around Asian public holidays could lead to short-term delays.

India’s coconut exports have risen sharply

India’s exports of coconut products rose by 62% to USD 824.6 million in the 2025/26 season, up from USD 509.9 million the previous year, as reported by Business Today. India is the leading producer of coconut products, accounting for 31.24% of global production. In 2024/25, around 20.3 billion coconuts were produced across 2.19 million hectares. The range of export products includes virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water and activated carbon; in addition to the Middle East, the USA, Europe and Australia are now also among the key markets. To promote cultivation, farmers receive, subject to certain conditions, support equivalent to up to USD 6,566/acre for the development of new acreage, as well as full reimbursement of costs of up to USD 4,924/acre as part of a productivity programme. A new Coconut Promotion Scheme is also planned for 2026/27, covering ageing plantations, pest and disease control, seedlings, new plantings and processing.
