EU sugar struggling for market share

FRANKFURT. Contrary to the estimates in May, the world sugar market carry-over stocks should reach 4.6% for 2017/18; before, the USDA counted on a decrease of 2%.

 

Increasing consumption
The EU sugar production has risen by about 22% in 2017/18; according to the current USDA report. The increase in India will be even higher, at +25%. The total global sugar production of 2017/18 is estimated to be 184.95 million mt, an 8% increase over last year (2016/17: 171.47 million mt). Over the last five years, global sugar consumption has increased by more than 5%, to 174.2 million mt; in 2016/17, consumption rates were at 171.6 million.
