Flaxseed: competitive pressure for Canada

OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Strong competition due to good flaxseed crops in the main producing countries could put pressure on prices in the Canadian market. EU imports have fallen by 10% so far this season.

Traders concerned about price declines

More favourable weather conditions this year have resulted in an increase in Canadian flaxseed production. The crop is therefore significantly better than initially expected and is currently estimated at 365,414 mt. In 2024, the yield was only 257,974 mt and in 2023 it was 272,736 mt. Although this is not an excessive amount, due to the significant increase in crops in Russia and Kazakhstan, Canada would have to maintain its export business with the US, the EU and China at least at the current level to prevent prices from comin
