ASTANA/OTTAWA. With global flaxseed production down by more than 30%, rising prices seem inevitable in the coming weeks. Kazakhstan's exports have fallen significantly year-on-year.

New season starts with a decline in exports

Trading activity in the Kazakh flaxseed market has stalled this season. The smaller crop, coupled with a gradual price increase and logistical hurdles, are making shipments to the EU more difficult. A large proportion of exports went to China, but the transport infrastructure here is overloaded. In the first three months of the 2023/2024 season (Sep-Nov), Kazakhstan exported 58,500 mt of flaxseed, just over half of what was shipped overseas in the same period last year.
