OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Higher imports and lower exports could mean that, this season, the supply of flaxseed on the Canadian market will exceed last year’s figure despite a lower production volume. EU countries have increased their imports from Canada by 238% since July.

Production down by 15%

The return to a more average yield of 1.5 mt/ha – following last year’s yield of 1.82 mt per hectare – meant that, despite the larger acreage, the Canadian flaxseed crop failed to match last year’s result. Production fell by 15% year-on-year to 386,000 mt. Saskatchewan recorded a 22% drop in production compared with 2025 and Manitoba a 7% decline, whilst production in the province of Alberta was actually 31% higher.

As Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates imports for the 2026/2027 season at 10,000 mt (+43%
