Flaxseed: Kazakh supplies nearly doubled

OTTAWA/ASTANA. Since the beginning of the year, imports of Russian flaxseed into the EU have been hit with an import duty of around 50%. However, Canadian suppliers' initial hopes of being able to increase their exports to the EU have vanished into thin air for the time being.

Strong competition

In December last year, Statistics Canada significantly revised its production estimates for the Canadian flaxseed crop in 2025 upwards. Larger acreage and bountiful yields meant that the result rose by 76% compared to the previous year to 454,000 mt. With the carry-over stocks from the previous year, 599,000 mt of Canadian flaxseed will be available on the market in 2025/2026 – around 39% more than in the previous season.
