SACRAMENTO. President Trump may not be Merkel’s best friend. But the Germans are certainly hungry for US almonds. Other competitors hardly stand a chance and need to be very creative. They are facing a tough season.

Germany mainly imports from the USA

Germany imports 90,000 mt of almonds on average every year. More than two thirds originate from the USA. Spain is only the second most important supplier, which corresponds with the country’s position as second largest producer. Import from Spain. However, increased by 25% in 2015.

Abundant supplies

One reason for the US success story are abundant supplies. Supplies in California amounted to more than 1 M mt in 2016/17. This had an enormous impact on exports and prices over the last six month. California sold a total of 506,663 mt, which is an increase of 33% as compared to last year.

First crop estimates

Production so far amounts to 956,173 mt and estimates predict almost 964,000 mt. Market participants reckon that production will further increase in 2017. Snowmelt has secured this year’s precipitation. Acreage and yield have also increased and first estimates predict a production of up to 1.05 M mt for 2017. Next week will be decisive since the trees have started to bloom, but frost or storms may have an impact.
