Goji berries: weather affects harvest

DALIAN. Unfavourable weather conditions are limiting the availability of the new goji berry crop. This is also having an impact on prices.

Limited availability

The goji berry harvest is underway in China. As the experts at Abbott Blackstone International report in their newsletter, strong domestic demand means that less produce is available for export to Europe. This is due to unfavourable weather conditions, which, according to the experts, have led to lower yields, reduced quality and harvest delays this year. Organic goji berries, in particular, are therefore in short supply. Furthermore, there is growing interest from the processing industry in fresh goji berries, which are used to produce juice and purée, as well as concentrates and extracts.

Prices have risen

Prices are already well above last year’s levels; since the beginning of July, export quotations for organic goji berries (280 pcs./100 g) have risen from USD 10,370/mt CFR Hamburg to USD 10,625/mt CFR. Experts expect prices to rise further as the harvest progresses. Added to this are high freight costs and restricted shipments due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Abbott Blackstone International expects freight rates to remain stable, if not rise, until the Chinese New Year in early February 2027.
