ORDU. Too many variables and not enough clarity are making it difficult for market players to find a common direction for further development of the hazelnut market.

Long-term commitment possible

The TMO has reserved itself the option to only support the hazelnut market for a limited period of time or to continue with the purchases in the new season. If the latter were to be the case, it would have significant effects on the availability and prices on the buyer side. The 2016 crop showed that the market should never feel safe too early. The initially good crop predictions were drastically reduced, empty shells and poor qualities made the prices skyrocket. This resulted in a slump in the demand, and the prices had to be readjusted downwards again in recent months. Much to the sorrow of the farmers, but with success for the export business.

Export and crop predictions

Exports are going relatively well for this time of year. Since the beginning of the season, about 177,000 mt of Turkish hazelnuts were delivered to foreign countries, and total exports for 2016/17 are currently estimated at 220,000 mt.

Regarding the predictions for the 2017 hazelnut production, strongly differentiated values are expected. Market players are hoping for an initial more precise outlook during the International Nuts and Dried Fruits Congress, taking place from May 19-21 2017 in Chennai (India).
