Hazelnuts: Estimates are a nuisance

ORDU. The Turkish hazelnut traders are not really happy with the crop estimates for the new season.

This has less to do with the expected volume than with the fear of emerging speculation. As is the case for sultanas, market players would prefer for officials to only publish their crop estimates later in the season. However, this can hardly be averted. With its quasi-monopoly position, Turkey is the most important player and its crop has a considerable effect on price developments on the international hazelnut market.

The pressure is rising

Market players report a lack of domestic and foreign purchase interest; many are already focussing on the new crop. According to reports, the trees are in better shape than last year, sparking hopes for better quality. However, farmers are still not giving in to the alleged pressure to sell, and purchases by the TMO remain within limits.

The prices for the new crop vary within a broad range that is acceptable to the buyers. But they should not rise too much more. Suppliers justify the price differences with the potential market intervention by the TMO at the beginning of the new harvest, which could make the prices rise by at least 1 TRY/kg. For this reason, relatively few contracts are currently being concluded despite the numerous requests.
